ABSTRACT: The article examines how the interrelationship between the concepts of peccatum (sin), iustitia (justice), and misericordia (mercy) in the political and theological thought of St. Augustine allows us to reconstruct the criterion of the legitimacy of power. The purpose of the study is to show that for St. Augustine, power is not an intrinsic value: it arises in conditions of sinful corruption and is intended to restrain the destructive manifestations of human will, but its justification depends on its conformity with justice and mercy. The methodology of the study is based on the semantic and lexical analysis of key Latin terms in the treatises “The City of God” and “On Free Will” with a comparison of the contexts of their use and normative conclusions about the purpose of power. It is shown that peccatum explains the necessity of the coercive aspect of power and, at the same time, limits its claims; iustitia acts as the main normative criterion linking the political order with the correct order of love (ordo amoris) and worship of God; misericordia determines the extent of the use of force, focusing punishment on correction rather than revenge. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the triad is considered as a unified matrix for assessing power, in which sin, justice, and mercy do not compete but rather mutually correct one another. The relevance of this topic is determined by the enduring interest in the Augustinian understanding of the state and the limits of coercion in society. The article concludes that, in the Augustinian perspective, the legitimacy of power depends on maintaining a triple criterion: recognition of sinfulness as the cause of power, orientation towards true justice, and a merciful way of exercising authority. Prospects for further research relate to the study of the reception of this matrix in legal traditions and in contemporary political ethics.
